Smiltene County has recognizable traditions in cycling, motorsport, football, orienteering, and athletics; here are held local and international sports events and competitions.
Smiltene County can be proud of its athletes, who started their careers thanks to local teachers and coaches and achieved world-recognized results.
Every year in Smiltene local and international sports events and competitions are held, bringing together a large number of visitors and participants, such as the Baltic and Latvian Cup stage in rowing slalom, Latvian championship stage in karting, Latvian and Estonian championship stages in autocross, MTB cycle marathons, “top!” street relay race, international orienteering competitions, Latvian Cup Triathlon in sprint distance, and other events.
The Sports Administration of Smiltene Region is the institution responsible for sports in the municipality, which operates in accordance with the by-laws, based on the laws of the council, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia, the Latvian Olympic Committee, sports federations, associations, clubs and other interested organizations implements the functions of the municipality in sports in the industry in Smiltene district. The purpose of the administration is to create an environment and conditions that would contribute to the creation of a sporty, physically active, healthy, educated society, and to popularize the name of the county on a national and international scale.
