Twin cities

Smiltene County municipality has active cooperation and fellowship with foreign municipalities. Twinning agreements with twin cities were concluded with the aim of strengthening the friendly relations between the twin cities and promoting greater cooperation in the economic, social, and cultural matters as well youth cooperation, etc. and to foster the exchange of information and experience between the two contracting parties.

Willich (Germany)

Willich is a city in Germany. It is located near Düsseldorf and about 30 kilometres from the border with the Netherlands. The city was founded in 1970 from several villages – Willich, Anrath, Schiefbahn, and Neersen. Willich was first mentioned in chronicles in the XII century.

Twinning agreement with the German city Willich was concluded on 15th November 2002 with the aim of developing and maintaining the exchange of information between municipal authorities such as the city development department, schools, kindergartens, etc.

Wiesenbach (Germany)

Twinning agreement with the German city Wiesenbach was concluded on 12th October 2001 with the aim of promoting the exchange of information in the operation of utility institutions in the context of development of city economics by setting joint cooperative activities every year, as well as to support and contribute to the meetings of inhabitants and the various associations (especially youth).

Pisek (Czech Republic)

Pisek is a city in the Czech Republic, in the South Bohemian region. Area – 63.22 km2. Population – 29,801 (2005).

Twinning agreement with the Czech city Pisek was concluded on 29th April 2004 with the aim of developing and strengthening friendly relations between the twin cities.

Pustomiti (Ukraine)

Pustomiti is a city in the west of Ukraine, near the border with Poland, Slovakia and Hungary.

Twinning agreement with the Ukrainian city Pustomiti was concluded on 28th July 2005 with the aim of developing and maintaining the exchange of information between municipal authorities, companies, and entities such as the City Development Department, schools, and kindergartens, as well as to encourage the meetings of citizens and associations (especially youth associations).

Lviv (Ukraine)

Twinning agreement with the Ukrainian city Lviv was concluded on 11th May 2011 with the aim of promoting cooperation in the fields of economy, education, culture, ecology, sport, and tourism.

Drohobych, Ukraine

On 8th November 2014, a twinning agreement was concluded with the city of Drohobich. The twinning agreement provides for the promotion of cooperation between municipalities and their institutions in the fields of education, culture, sport, tourism, environmental protection, social protection, youth policy, and general economic development.

Porhov (Russia)

One of the oldest cities in the Pskov region. The modern Porhov is a developed city with factories for the production of relays, lime and cheese. There is the furniture-making union “Porhov”, flax processing factory and bread factory.

Twinning agreement with the Russian city Porhov was concluded on 30th June 2010, with the aim of promoting the cooperation in organisation of cultural and sport activities, exchange of work experience of municipal institutions, establishing of direct communication between the subjects of business activity in Porhov District in Smiltene County, as well as to promote cooperation in the development and implementation of programs of educational authorities, and the preparation and realization of joint projects to address the current problems of municipal bodies.

Rovigo (Italy)

Rovigo is a city and commune in the Veneto region of the north-eastern Italy. The city is located 80 km from Venice. Population – 52,206 (2009). Area – 108 km2.

Twinning agreement with the Italian city Rovigo was concluded on 27th April 2011 with the aim of strengthening existing friendly relations and promoting wider cooperation in the areas of economy, social, cultural and youth matters, as well as promoting exchange of experience between the two regions.

Pincara (Italy)

Pincara – a city and commune in the Veneto region, the north-eastern Italy. Population – 1,298 (2004). Area – 18 km2. The city is located 70 km from Venice.

Twinning agreement with the Italian city Pincara was concluded on 16th November 2002 with the aim of strengthening friendly relations between the twin cities.

Pāvilosta (Latvia)

Pāvilosta is a small town in the west of Latvia by the sea. Its history began with the construction of a port at the mouth of the River Saka. The name (Paulshafen) was acquired in 1879, when von Lilienfeld, the owner of the River Manor (Upesmuiža) gave the name of his brother Paul to the city that did not yet exist. Pāvilosta acquired the city rights only in 1991. The surroundings of Pāvilosta are characterized by untouched coastal nature. Natural coastal habitats can be found within a few minutes’ walk from the city centre.
