Culture institutions

In Smiltene County, the function defined by the State – to take care of culture and promote the preservation of traditional cultural values and the development of folk creativity – is performed by the Smiltene County Cultural Administration and institutions and departments, which are under its supervision and subordinate to it:

Traditional cultural events

Charity event “White, White Heart” – 1st of June. On the International Day for Protection of Children, a cycle of charity events is concluded with activities for families, where donations are collected for Smiltene County children with health problems.

Midsummer Festival – in the shortest night of the year – 22nd of June – people from the county meet at Smiltene Parish Līgo Hill, where they dance and sing until the sunrise.

Smiltene City Festvial – the second or third week of July. The city festival is celebrated with a variety of musical, sports, and exciting activities both for big and small!

Memorial events of Lāčplēsis Day in Smiltene County on 11th of November. On this day, Latvian freedom fighters, heroes are honoured with commemorative events.

Celebration of the anniversary of proclamation of the Republic of Latvia in Smiltene County. From 16th to 18th November, the Independence Day is celebrated with festive events in parishes and the city of the county saying “thank you” to the local residents for their contribution to the formation of the county and bearing the name of Latvia in the world.

Celebration of New Year’s Eve on 31st of December. The city of Smiltene gathers local residents and guests to welcome the New Year with music and festive fireworks.
